Tuscan Wine Region.

Tuscany is a landscape of rolling hills and incredible views, home to the Sangiovese triumvirate of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

The so-called Super Tuscans, such as Massetto, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Tignanello and Le Pergole Torte, mostly take advantage of the Toscana IGT appellation to enable the use of non-indigenous varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Decanter

A Brief History Of Sangiovese.

The history of the Sangiovese grape in Italy is both longand complex. Historians argue that the Etruscans first cultivated Sangiovese incentral-western Italy in the eighth century BC. Although historically,Sangiovese was never exclusive to Tuscany, it became synonymous with theregion’s viticulture in the Middle Ages. Interestingly, the name Sangiovesemeans ‘blood of Jove,’ referring to the Roman deity Jupiter. In the late 16thcentury, the Tuscan agronomist Giovanvettorio Soderini is reported to have firstmentioned Sangiovese, identifying it as a signature cornerstone of localwinemaking.

In the hills between Florence and Siena, this magic happenswith growing regularity. There are over six Chianti sub-zones in Tuscany, butChianti Classico is the most highly regarded one. There is a remarkable synergybetween the terroir and Sangiovese, which produces this noble grape’sincomparable expression. The villas, cypresses, vines, and rolling hills createan immutable paradise, arguably Europe’s most captivating piece of bucolic splendour.

At its best, top-of-the-range Chianti is complex, savory,and richly tannic. Cherry, strawberry, fig, and plum flavors will emerge in itsyouth. With age, Chianti Classico develops a gorgeous range of tertiarysensations: leather, tobacco, forest floor, truffle, woodsmoke, and oregano. Itmanages to be both sumptuous and refreshing to the core. This is one of my favourite producers of Sangiovese in Tuscany. Located in the heart of Chianti Classico, this high toned wine will drink well now or cellar for the next decade or so. A bargain at $25 a bottle.
