Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco DOCG 2020

The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins. This ambitious release of 300,000 bottles is slated to hit the market in fall 2023. Drink 2025-2045. 95 points Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Aug 25, 2023)

The 2020 Barbaresco is a lovely, harmonious wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Forward fruit and soft curves are perhaps a bit uncharacteristic for young Barbaresco but that also make the wine very enjoyable. Juicy red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco all meld together in the glass. Classicists will probably prefer other vintages, but it’s hard not to like the 2020 for its charming, effusive personality. At the same time, aeration brings out greater aromatic presence and a good deal of structure, too. Drink 2024-2032, 92 points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Still vinous, with youthful strawberry notes, rosebud, violet, liquorice and a whiff of cinnamon. Savoury and floral on the palate which is dominated by firm, crisp, long acidity and velvety ripe tannins of an amazing quality; perhaps just a bit stern on the aftertaste. Amazing Barbaresco. Here we have the cooperative of Barbaresco and one known as producing some of the best-priced quality wines in all of Langhe. This will not be released before October 2023. Drink 2023 - 2040. 94 points Aldo Fiordelli – Decanter

Embrace the harmonious blend of cooked cherries infused with an array of mixed spices, accompanied by subtle hints of medicinal herbs and rose water. Soft and rounded, yet possessing a discernible edge, this wine presents a fruit-forward profile loaded with flavors of cherry and raspberry, all the while, complemented by refreshing acidity. Its polished and elegant character develops throughout the bottle and will age deep into the future while still being great today. 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Ripe red in color, the 2020 Barbaresco boasts a nice balance of purity and ripeness, with lifted spice notes of dried cherries, peppercorn, pine, and anise. An impressive Barbaresco, it’s medium-bodied and offer sanguine richness and yet has a weightless feel. It’s propelled forward through the palate, with bright orange peel notes, vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a long finish. It has more richness in this vintage as well as having a lot of finesse and elegance to offer. It’s an exceptional entry Barbaresco. (AF) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

..An excellent bottle of Barbaresco, lean and elegant, stylish and balanced, with lots of ferrous/iron filings character, distinctive regional minerality, medium-bodied and intense, with lovely balance and mouth-feel. Just ideal with the meal..” 93 points and Wine of the Week, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

The 2020 Produttori del Barbaresco ‘Barbaresco’ is a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo, crafted by one of the most reputable cooperatives in the wine world. Produttori del Barbaresco has been known to create the standard for what Barbaresco has become. Their first vintage is 1958, and they source the grapes from 9 different vineyard that are also bottled as single vineyard in exceptional year (as a Riserva). I love Barbaresco so much, having the vineyard closer to the tanaro River than Barolo, you usually find more sand in the soil. This helps the wines showing a more pronounce fresh fruit aromas and beautiful crushed roses. The tannic structure is also softer than Barolo. It is sure that you can age this beauty, but Barbaresco is a wine you can enjoy now, and you rarely be disappointed. The palate is medium to full-bodied, in this vintage I also find a touch more of purple fruit that makes this wine more impactful than some other colder vintages. Produttori has been using only traditional Slavonian Oak barrel (Grandi Botti) since the beginning. The Barbaresco is aged 24 months by requirement. Bargain: drink now or forget about it in your cellar for the next 15+ years. One of the best values in European wine. Orazio Campoli

The Wines:

It finally happened—the world has awakened to one of its greatest wine treasures, the Produttori del Barbaresco. Since 1958, the Produttori has been the reference point for classic Barbaresco. And since their launching in 1967, the Produttori's Riservas have been the defining expressions of Rabajà, Asili, Ovello and Barbaresco's other noble vineyards.
The Produttori still uses traditional methods: an 18- to 21-day primary fermentation with aging for up to three years in botti. Such techniques yield gloriously transparent wines, affording a unique opportunity to explore the region's finest terroirs.
Though one of Piedmont's greatest producers, the Produttori has long lived in the shadow of more famous names like Giacosa and Gaja. It was not until recently, thanks to the outspoken advocacy of critics like Antonio Galloni and John Gilman, and merchants like ourselves, that the Produttori is getting the attention it deserves in the U.S and around the world.

The Underlying Terroirs
The Produttori's nine crus or vineyards lie on steep slopes composed of the classic firm clay and limestone marl of the Langhe. Those from the northernmost chain of hills–Ovello, Montefico and Montestefano–have a higher clay content and are known for their rich earthy, meaty flavors, full body and firm structure.

To the south are Pajé and Moccagatta, noted for their intensity and elegance. Still further south is perhaps Barbaresco's greatest slope, boasting the southfacing Asili, Rabajà and Pora. Below these three icons is the solitary southwest-facing slope of Rio Sordo, whose opulent Barbaresco exudes aromas of black cherry and truffle.
In each vintage, the juice from these crus is blended to produce a single Barbaresco which is one of the great wine values not only of Italy, but the world. But in great years, part of the production of each vineyard is set aside for an additional year of aging and for separate bottling as a single-vineyard Riserva. When these Riservas are made, they constitute the quintessential examples of Barbaresco's greatest terroirs.

The History

The Produttori del Barbaresco has a long and distinguished history and great wines have always been made here. Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo wine or simply labelled "Nebbiolo di Barbaresco". But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the "Cantine Sociali", by gathering nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned. Cavazza understood that Nebbiolo from Barbaresco differed from Barolo and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label. The "Cantine Sociali" was forced to close in the 1920's because of fascist economic rules. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement, and then in the winery built across the square from where the Produttori is still located. United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village.

The Produttori del Barbaresco now has 56 members and 100 hectares (250 acres) of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation, which amounts to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area.

Boccaccio Cellars offers real time shipping rates at checkout. These are heavily subsidised rates directly from Australia Post and will vary depending on your postcode.

Unfortunately, due to the ever increasing costs of postage we are unable to offer free shipping any longer. Postal increases have seen the average box of wine range from $30-$60, which can represent up to 500% of the cost of the average bottle of wine.

Your postal costs are calculated on the following factors:

  • Where in Australia you are shipping to (Where rural postcodes obviously attract a higher charge)
  • What in Australia you are shipping (Beer and water for example, are calculated in real time without any additional subsidy. This is because the margins for these products are minimal). Dry goods attract a discounted flat fee of $12 per carton (Calculated by gross weight).
